“The single most important reason to choose MIPS is reliability,” says Vango’s CEO Dr. Tan.
Vango develops chips for Smart Grid. For Smart Grid, nothing is more important than reliability. MIPS had historically focused on servers and high-end networking equipment, which call for higher reliability than PCs and other consumer products.
“Vango is not just going to license MIPS’ cores; more importantly, Vango and MIPS have a strategic alliance,” goes on Dr. Tan. “For China Smart Grid applications, Vango is the flagship strategic MIPS Alliance Program partner. Vango and MIPS are going to promote MIPS-Based MCU cores as a more reliable alternative to those that were originally designed for consumer markets.”
Beyond that, Vango is authorized to distribute the MIPS Eclipse-based integrated design environment (IDE) which works seamlessly with the Mentor Graphics® Sourcery CodeBench Lite Edition C/C++ GNU-based toolchain. The open-source platform Sourcery CodeBench is based on the popular GNU Toolchain and Eclipse IDE, which are proven, defacto industry standards.
“This is huge,” says Dr. Tan. “Because in the future all State Grid products will be free from IP infringement. Using any pirated software and tools in making the final products will become unacceptable. With Vango’s innovation culture and strategic alliance with MIPS, Vango is uniquely positioned to becoming one of the leading chip suppliers for Smart Grid.”
